Kokusai Nihon Katchū Bugu Shinkō Kyōkai
The KNKBSK is an independent certification business specialising in the authentication of Japanese antiques, including swords, armour, and related artefacts. This website allows any person or authority presented with a KNKBSK certificate to verify the legitimacy of the issuing body and understand the scope of the certification.
The KNKBSK issues a single form of certification, the Certificate of Age, confirming authenticity and historical period through expert examination.
Certificate of Age
The Certificate of Age provides a clear, independent record confirming that an item has been examined by a KNKBSK-appointed specialist in Japanese arms and armour. The certificate remains with the object and continues to support it through ownership changes, collection management, and sale.
Why Certification Matters
The Certificate of Age is issued independently and is not linked to sale or valuation, ensuring impartial assessment. It is recognised by Customs authorities and is commonly used to support correct tariff classification, including eligibility for reduced or duty-free entry where applicable. The certificate is also used for insurance purposes, providing insurers with authoritative confirmation of antiquity. KNKBSK certificates are recognised by collectors, professional dealers, and auction houses.
Scope of Certification
Certificates of Age are issued for Japanese swords, Japanese armour, and associated fittings and related artefacts. This is the only certification offered by the KNKBSK.
Issuance and Fees
Certificates may be requested directly by collectors or through authorised professional dealers. Issuance is handled through KNKBSK offices in the United Kingdom and Japan. Fees excluding postage are £27.00 or ¥6,800.
Security and Verification
Each Certificate of Age includes a unique hole-punched identification number, a hand-applied hanko stamp, and an embossed KNKBSK seal. A digital record of every certificate issued is retained by the KNKBSK to allow verification when required.
